Located in Northeast Bergen County in New Jersey, Christ the Teacher Interparochial School is a consolidation of two educational institutions, Madonna and Holy Trinity and is under the auspices of three parishes, Madonna, Holy Trinity, Holy Rosary and Epiphany. At one time, all three parishes had vibrant schools and were vehicles which enabled young people to develop their intelligence and skills to function as human and humane persons in a pluralistic society. Holy Rosary School, a one floor building with eight classrooms opened its doors in 1954 with kindergarten through grade 2. A new grade was added each year until 1960 when all eight grades were available. There was a full curriculum in compliance with the Archdiocese of Newark. However, because of small enrollment, the school closed in 1980. Holy Trinity students attended Madonna School until it launched its own school in 1959 with grades 1 through 4. The building accommodated a cafeteria, gym, and nine classrooms. Each successive year, a new grade was added. To promote younger children with an educational beginning in a Catholic atmosphere, a kindergarten was started in 1982 and Pre K 3 and 4 in 1987. Madonna School opened in 1880 and was staffed by the School Sisters of Notre Dame. It was located on Lemoine Avenue until 1951 when the new building on Whiteman Street was built. This building had seventeen rooms, a cafeteria and chapel. The Sisters served the school until 1989. Epiphany School opened in 1930. It was located on Lafayette St. in Cliffside Park under the guidance of the Sisters of Charity from Convent Station, New Jersey. The Sisters served the school until 1986. In 1991, under the direction of the Archdiocese of Newark, Holy Trinity and Madonna Schools were merged, using the Madonna facilities, into Christ the Teacher Interparochial School, serving children from Pre K3 through grade 8. In 2006 Epiphany School joined the merger. The schools were united in a tradition of excellence and social development. |
